You can (and should) fly cheap ships to start with. FW is a bit of an isk sink hole - so its better to fly cheap frigs/cruisers at least till you get the hang of things or have a surefire way of repacing your losses. And don't think that "cheap" means rubbish. A Tech1 frigate with a point (scrambler) is often a great way to start off, and helpfull to a fleet.
With FW you can often dive straight into big "fleet" battles (as well as smaller skirmishes).
If you do some research you can probably find yourself a half decent dedicated FW corp. Some have ship replacement programs, some have good FC's (fleet commanders) and of course you will be surrounding yourself with pilots who pvp all the time and can give you advice.
If you decide you want to join FW but not a full time FW corp - you have the benefit of being able to hop in and out whenever you wish (theres a 24 hour waiting period to join/leave). To give you an idea, my previous corp was a part-time FW corp - we joined FW on a Friday and left on a Sunday, then we spent the rest of our week recovering isk by running missions.
I'd strongly reccomend you look into this, from what you have said it may well be the thing that gets you properly hooked on Eve. Even if you don't stay in FW or later decide to move on to 0.0 or go pirating, FW will give you some fairly instant pvp gratification and you don't need to fly expensive, skill intensive ships to do well. (As will all things in eve, experience is just as important as skills and isk).
If you want to have a chat about FW and how it works in game feel free to send me a convo (though we will probably be enemies if you sign up yehe! )
As for your other points - Dreadnaughts, and such, are MEANT to take a long long time to get into. Focus on one step at a time. Get good with frigates, then try cruisers, etc etc. There are many different roles in pvp fleets so look for something more obtainable to start with.
And oh my God please stop doing learning skills... at the very most go for 3/4 in the basiscs and then focus on ship skills. You will continue to die of bordom if you try and do it all to 5 first - not to mention you won't see the benefits of it for years and years!
